Is it required to give your social security number for car insurance?

I have car insurance right now that has been increasing due to changes in my credit report. I have never had an accident and have never been late on my payments. I actually pay my car insurance about two weeks in advance. Is there a law stating that I have to give my SSN to a car insurance company? Is there a car insurance company where I do not have to provide my SSN? (I live in Nevada).
Thanks!

  1. check ed your bank account out lately. . . its probably empty or soon will be
    one word. . . . SCAM

  2. If you’re just trying to avoid having your credit checked, then it’s not worth the bother. The insurance company has other methods of checking on your record.

  3. It’s unlikely you will find a company willing to give you insurance without reviewing your credit, they use it as part of their equation for calculating your premiums.

Your credit rating is one of the pieces insurance companies use to determine how much of a risk you are to them. People with low credit scores tend to make poor choices and take more risks, and therefore ’statistically’ tend to have more accidents. Your credit rating goes down, your rates go up, and vice versa.

No, there’s no law requiring you to give your SSN, but I think you’ll find that refusing to give it will result in even higher rates, or even the denial of issuing you an policy.

  5. Car insurance companies typically require this because they want to check your credit.
I don’t think it is a law or anything. If you don’t want to give it to them you don’t have to and they don’t have to sell you insurance.
